Rochdale is an incredible place to do business – the town continues to see unceasing growth and regeneration taking place, organisations from across the region are revelling in constant success and praise is coming in from high places – like the House of Commons!
In this post, we’d like to take you through some of the best success stories from last month – including staggering lottery funding and massive redevelopments.
Rochdale’s biggest success story
The Manchester Evening News posted a great article in June about a multimillionaire business owner who preaches happiness over profit – an absolutely wonderful message to spread. However, we were slightly more interested in the history of Richard Tang’s business, Zen Internet, and we were delighted to find that it all began in Rochdale!
The MEN wrote: “Sitting in class at his primary school in Rochdale, deeply affected by recent news reports of people starving to death in Africa, Tang set himself an almost impossible goal – to build a massive multi-national company and save the world from starvation.” What a man.
Zen is now a £71m business and is still based in Rochdale – they even recently scooped the top prize at the MEN Business Awards.
From a desire to help people, to a huge fortune which is allowing him to do just that, Richard Tang is a business professional that we should all look up to in Rochdale.
Castleton Co-Op’s incredible redevelopment
After an extensive overhaul, the Co-Op is back in the Borough!
This time around the store’s vow to put back into the local community is stronger than ever with Area Manager, Alex Price, stating that “our aim is for stores to be at the heart of local life, bringing communities together and offering great quality products, when and where our members and customers need them”.
The revamp promises healthy and fresh foods, wines and essentials – ideal for a Friday night dinner!
While the new store will be a handy new place for locals to grab what they need, the Co-Op also reinforces its community aspect by encouraging new customers to immerse themselves in their new community by becoming a Co-Op member, or co-owner. With their members receiving 5% rewards when buying own brand goods and the Co-Op donating a further 1% to local causes, this new Rochdale enterprise will be more than just your local corner stop!
A swift trip to the House of Commons
Its always nice to get a bit of recognition, and Rochdale Borough Council has had just that in the form of an invitation to the House of Commons!
Two of Rochdale’s finest apprenticeship managers, Toni Carter and Andy Tuner, were recognised in a ceremony given by Government minister Anne Milton, where they were praised for being a “driving force for delivering high quality apprenticeships”.
In a statement from Alan Brett, Leader of Rochdale Borough Council, he beamed: “This is a fantastic recognition for our apprenticeship scheme which is highly recognised as one of the best in local government”. Well done team!
Rochdale’s enviable National Lottery funding
In a recent article by Rochdale Online, it was praised that since 1995, communities all over Rochdale have been awarded National Lottery funds of £34 million – and what amazing causes the money has gone to.
The largest sum went into a simply fantastic scheme called Homeshare – PossAbilities CIC, in 2015. This £267,000 donation was invested into a home share scheme matching older homeowners, looking for support and companionship, with younger people looking for affordable accommodation – a truly innovative and commendable idea.
Another lot of funding of £10,000 was used to develop the town’s Multicultural Resource Centre, Community Recipe Book, which has been hugely popular throughout the town.
Rochdale Riverside – work continues to progress
And then there’s us! Rochdale Riverside’s exciting £80m development sees work on-site continue to grow, with an aim to bringing at least 1,000 full time jobs to the local area and boosting the economy by £17 million a year!
Contractors Willmott Dixon are currently on-site and continuing their work on the area’s foundations and piling, whilst our agents Cheetham Mortimer and Lambert Smith Hampton continue strategic discussions with potential occupiers to bring the most sought-after retail, food & beverage and entertainment tenants to Rochdale.
What a month!
